As part of Huawei’s Seeds for the Future programme, UNISSA students will stand to learn from experts in the telecommunication sector and ICT industry

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, March 7, 2023 – Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) and Huawei Technologies (Brunei) Sdn Bhd (Huawei) have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote collaboration and innovation for the university’s academic activities in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) technologies. The signing ceremony was held at the Huawei Technologies (Brunei) Sdn Bhd. Office and was attended by representatives from both UNISSA and Huawei.

Under the MoU, UNISSA and Huawei will collaborate on joint research projects, seminars, workshops, and other academic activities. The partnership will also empower UNISSA students with practical experiences, internships, and career development initiatives in collaboration with Huawei. This encapsulates Huawei’s support for Brunei Wawasan 2035, playing its part to continuously nurture skilled, adaptive, and innovative young talent within the telecommunication and ICT space.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, Rector at UNISSA said, “We are delighted to partner with Huawei, a leading global technology company with a proven track record of innovation and excellence, and we look forward to

opportunities for our students to engage in practical experiences and career development initiatives. I believe that this partnership will be a stepping stone towards further collaborations between our esteemed university and Huawei Technologies. I look forward to witnessing the fruits of our joint efforts in the years to come.”

Echoing Dr. Haji Norarfan’s statement, Mr Zhang Jianwei, CEO of Huawei Technologies (B) Sdn Bhd said, “This partnership will enable us to leverage our expertise and resources in ICT technology to enhance UNISSA’s academic programs and curriculum, while nurturing the next generation of talent within the ICT and telecommunications space for a digital-first future.”

The MoU between UNISSA and Huawei initially focuses on the Faculty of Islamic Technology at UNISSA, and both parties are committed to working closely together to promote academic excellence and innovation. The partnership may involve initiatives related to talent development and skills training for students in the fields of technology and ICT, as evidenced by Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program. In addition, the monthly talk series organized by the Faculty of Islamic Technology and Huawei at UNISSA is a significant strength of this collaboration. Dr. Dayang Hjh Tiawa, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Technology at UNISSA, present as a witness emphasizes the importance of collaboration and partnership between both industry and organization.
