Johor is the only state in Malaysia that has a crown and holds the Sultan's Coronation Ceremony. Maharaja Abu Bakar who gained international recognition as the Sultan of Johor through the Allegiance Agreement with the British in 1885 inspired and revealed a crown for him and his successor Sultans. The action is a radical step in the modernization of the state of Johor.
Sultan Abu Bakar ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Johor in 1862, but his coronation ceremony took place in 1886. Sultan Abu Bakar legislated the law about the successor to the throne of the Kingdom of Johor in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Johor in 1895. However, he did not set the coronation ceremony as a condition or legal process to ascend the throne. For this reason, the Coronation Ceremony is more of a custom, and not a legal requirement, the Crown and the Coronation Ceremony confirm the legitimacy of the Sultan's appointment and increase his sovereignty.
