505 _aMalaysia is predominantly an agricultural country. Rubber, oil palm and other crops form the backbone of the economy. As pests cause considerable damage to crops the Malaysian Plant Protection Society, on its part organises lectures and seminars to minimise ravages caused by them. A decision was made in 1977 to hold a conference on plant protection with particular reference to crops grown in the tropics. The Malaysian Plant Protection Society in conjunction with the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia took responsibility. on this The aims of the conference were to provide a forum for scientists and non-scientists to discuss crop protection problems of the South-east Asian and Pacific region; to update knowledge and recommendations in different aspects of crop protection; and, to assist the farming community and estate sector adopt the latest methods of crop protection to maximise yields and income. Consequently, in the conference, papers were contributed on entomology, plant diseases, weed science and agricultural legislations. The contributions have been generally original an the discussions held have emphasised the need for further research in plant protection. It is hoped that similar conferences will take place from time to time to update technical information and provide solutions to the many factors affecting the maximisation of crop yields in the region.
