505 _aTwenty-two of the 25 cattle stations in the Barkly Tablelands district were surveyed. These stations are generally large economic units. They are carrying an estimated 439 230 cattle, 25% of the current estimated cattle population of the Northern Territory and turned off 119 306 sale cattle in 1980, 26% of the Northern Territory turn off. Stations spent an average of $109 675 on capital expenses and $251 217 on operating costs (not interest or capital repayment) per property in 1980. The major capital expenditures were on waters, vehicles, fencing and yards, while the main operating costs were labour, cartage of cattle and repairs and maintenance to the stations in descending order of cost.
