The Compensatory Forest Plantation Project is now being undertaken by the Malaysian Government, through the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, aimed at compensating the impending shortage of timber in Peninsular Malaysia within the next decade. This project involves the establishment of fast growing species after all commercial timbers have been harvested from logged-over forests.
A total of 500,000 ha of land area has been planned for forest plantation establishment by the year 2000. To date, a total of 90,000 ha has been planted with Acacia mangium, Gmelina arborea, and Paraserianthes falcataria on a 10-15 year rotation in the states of Johore, Pahang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Perak, Kelantan, and Terengganu (KPU, 1989).
