Sustainable agricultural and rural development depends, to a large extent, on soil health and integrity of soil resources. After all, how can agricultural crop production for food security be sustainable if soil resources become degraded? In the Philippines and in the whole Southeast Asia, soil degradation continues to be a serious problem. One of the major causes of the deterioration of the quality of this important natural resource is the continued practice of conventional plow-based agriculture.
