The culture and customs of the palace of the Sultanate of Johor are the result of the mixing and blending of Malay, Islamic and Western cultures inherited from the glory days of the Johor empire, to the time of the Treasurer and the Temenggong dynasty until now, Sultan Abu Bakar introduced and added Western culture, especially English as an innovation of renewal to make the state of Johor a modern schuah negen. The reforms that were introduced included modern technology such as administrative systems, transportation, security and defense, building design, ways of dressing and ways of honoring His Majesty's sovereignty. The vision of Sultan Abu Bakar and the sultans after his majesty created many reforms that preceded the governments of other states and are now icons of the state of Johor. Among them are the Constitution of the State Government 1895, the Crown of the Kingdom, the Rank of Relatives and the Rank of the Crown, the State Loyal Deputy Soldier, the State Coat of Arms and others

Sultan Abu Bakar is famous as the first Malay king to visit England in 1866, and the first to be given international recognition. His Majesty successfully introduced Johor in the political and international trade arena. His Majesty is also famous for his stance of defending the independence and sovereignty of the state of Johor from British colonialism for 33 years in a row. His Majesty used the power of efficient and efficient state management and administration systems to combat the British's evil plans. In addition, His Majesty gave opportunities to Malays, Chinese, people of Malay descent from the Indonesian archipelago and people of Indian descent to develop the country together. Sultan Abu Bakar's action became the basis of understanding, cooperation and tolerance between his people now, in line with his call "Muafakat itu Berkar".

The Sultanate after Sultan Abu Bakar continued his vision by adding and improving palace customs. Therefore, now the Sultanate of Johor is very concerned about the people, and the customary behavior as much as possible does not cause difficulties for the people. The way to pay respect for men and women is simple. The way of dressing pays respect to the freedom of race and nation. Forbidden colors are set aside so that there is no difference between the king and the people. Islamic elements and culture are still maintained, such as reciting prayers asking for God's blessing and protection before and after the ceremony, and swearing in Islam.

The writer was able to give a detailed and accurate picture of the changes enriching the palace customs because he was directly involved as Dato' Penghulu Istiadat Johor Palace who handled the royal ceremonies.
