Shrimp is one of the leading commodities contributing to the socio-economic development in ASEAN countries. Shrimp and shrimp products are mainly destined for Japan, USA, Canada, European Union, Australia, etc, and the Directorate General of Fisheries (DGF) Indonesia, is very concerned with the quality, safety and economic integrity of these products.

During the implementation of the ASEAN-Canada Fisheries Post-Harvest Technology Project - Phase II, the Regional Centre for Fish Inspection and Quality Control (RC-FIQC), Indonesia, carried out a pilot projects on "Improved Quality Control for Fresh and Frozen Shrimp (WBS 231). One of the outputs of the pilot project is a manual detailing Good Handling and Manufacturing Practice and the HACCP-based Integrated Quality Management Program (IQMP) for shrimp processors.

The pilot project also provided transfer of technology in terms of expertise on Inspection and quality control of fresh and frozen shrimp to both government inspectors and private personnel in Indonesia and ASEAN member countries.

The Manual may be used as guideline to either shrimp processors or fish inspectors in their application of Good Handling and Manufacturing Practices, as well as the HACCP-based IQMP.

I would like to take the opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), ASEAN Executing Agency (AEA) and the Canadian Supply and Services Agency for their support of the ASEAN-Canada Fisheries Post-Harvest Technology Project - Phase II and this activity.
