Contents:
In recent years, biotechnology has undergone rapid development in the areas of agriculture, human health and processing industry. Biotechnology products such as drugs, food and cosmetics have been produced in increasing numbers. Questions have been raised on the existence of any form of control in governing the safe release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) into the environment and in the management of potential hazards that they might pose to the community and the environment. This book represents the first effort by the Department of Agriculture to create awareness among the public on biosafety of GMOs. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on GMOs are taken partly from the ASEAN Secretariat's list of FAQs, that are compiled from members of ASEAN Countries following the decisions of the Ad-Hoc Task Force Meeting on ASEAN Public Awareness on GMOs, held in Jakarta on 3 March 2000. The book is compiled in such a way that it can be easily understood by the public on the issues of GMOs, which has caused much concerns to the international public at large on the effect of safety, health and environment.
