Brunei Darussalam, known as the ''Abode of Peace,'' is a peaceful kingdom in Southeast Asia that gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1984. It lies at the northwest of the island of Borneo with a total land area of 5,765 square kilometers (576,500 hectares [hal]) (Figure 1).
