Almost all economic activities in Brunei Darussalam occur in the coastal zone and more than 85% of the population lives there. As such, it is subjected to major development pressures and the resultant environmental concerns. The need for judicious management of the environment is now well recognised at both the conceptual and policy levels. The vital interdependence between environment and development is now widely accepted by policymakers. The government of Brunei Darussalam is consulted in the sustainable development of its coastal zone.<br/><br/>In this regard, the successful completion of the national component of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations/United States Coastal Resources Management Project (ASEAN/US CRMP) is very much welcome. The formulation of The integrated management plan for the coastal zone of Brunei Darussalam and the publication of supporting documents, namely, The coastal environmental profile of Brunei Darussalam: resource assessment and management issues (1987) and The coastal resources of Brunei Darussalam: status, utilization and management (1992), will supplement our long-term development efforts.<br/><br/>This plan is topical and timely and will guide us towards an integrated and sustainable coastal zone management. Such a management plan is important in resolving the conflicting interests among development projects. |
