Agriculture in Brunei Darussalam has undergone tremendous transformation over the past two decades. Booming petroleum industry and rapid socio-economic development have changed much of the rural scenery. Farmland has been converted into growth centres in response to development and requirement of residential enclaves to meet the demand for better living facilities. Agricultural pursuits have declined and major food commodities have to be imported.
The Department of Agriculture is aware of the developments and has consolidated its activities geared towards utilizing the country resources to stimulate agricultural growth and agro-industrial development. It places emphasis on crop species and animal breeds that are vital to food security and provide the livelihood of rural community. Owing to the small number of people involved in agricultural pursuits, the Department recognises the need for technology-based agricultural development. Thus, strengthening the institution is crucial to develop technology. train personnel and implement production programmes. Research to generate improved technology forms the base for integration with other interacting factors, such as production inputs, extension and education, incentives for farmers, markets and other social elements to accelerate agricultural productivity.
