Abstract
Excessive dowry is a phenomenon that is gaining increasing attention among the Bruneian society. High dowries often become reasons for delays or cancellations of marriages and have profound effects on the economic and social stability of the community. This study aims to investigate the effects of excessive dowries on the Bruneian society. The methodology of this study involves data collection through field studies and document analysis to understand the views and experiences of the community regarding this issue. The findings of the study indicate that excessive dowries cause significant emotional and financial pressure on individuals and their families. Additionally, it also affects the relationships between the families of the prospective brides and grooms, often resulting in tension and conflicts. Proposed solutions include educational and awareness approaches to emphasize the importance of modest and reasonable marriages. Pre-marital education, briefings for parents, and awareness campaigns can serve as initial steps to reduce the pressure of excessive dowries in Bruneian society. This study contributes to a better understanding of the issue of excessive dowries and provides guidance for further action in addressing this issue in Brunei. It is hoped that the results of this study will help the Bruneian society improve the state of marriages and family life through a forward-looking and holistic approach.
