Abstract
Lately, marriage while studying has become one of the most contentious issues among the society in our country. It has both benefits and drawbacks in terms of students’ learning development and family life. Some parents oppose this marriage, and some others encourage their children, particularly the daughters, to start a family while they are still studying. Today’s society frequently associates this issue with ‘underage marriage’, sometimes known as ‘early marriage’. The perception of the minimum age for marriage is obviously significant in Brunei Darussalam’s legislation and Islamic law. Furthermore, divorce rates among newlyweds are also increasing nowadays. Therefore, this study will examine this issue by observing it from Islamic perspective and also from the findings of studies conducted at several universities in Brunei Darussalam in order to find out its factors, problems, and impacts on students’ learning and family life. With the findings of this study, several opinions and proposals can be studied and regarded as advice to prevent the issue of divorce among newlyweds from escalating. Based on this source, this study also suggests some actions that should be taken by several parties in order to help students, who wish to get married or are already married while studying, in a more profound, careful, and serious manner.
