Abstract
The incorporation of nanotechnology into cosmetic products has been emerging over the years, in which there is lack of information on its halal status and safety aspects. This dissertation provides an overview of these two aspects as well as the awareness and perception of people in Brunei Darussalam towards halal nanocosmetics and its safety. Data has been collected using library resources and descriptive survey technique. It was found that nanocosmetics products are halal based on fatwa that has been issued within the MABIM countries due to the transformation technique while the safety of nanocosmetics products depends on the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials utilized in the cosmetic formulations. It was discovered that there was no significant differences between the educational level and the awareness concerning nanotechnology and nanocosmetics (p > 0.05) except for the respondents’ awareness concerning the nanocosmetics’ definition (t (38) = 2.204, p = 0.034). Furthermore, there were mainly positive correlations between awareness and perception towards halal nanocosmetics and its safety except between awareness of nanotechnology word and nanocosmetics’ applications with the perception regarding the safety of nano products; benefits>risks when nanotechnology being used as the method of production (rs (98) = -0.006, -0.008 p < 0.949, 0.937 respectively). This dissertation revealed that, as a way towards achieving Wawasan Brunei 2035, the awareness and perception of people in Brunei Darussalam on the development of certain technology is vital regardless their current educational levels. However, the exploration of knowledge level might bring more light to the study of nanocosmetics on the account of the different educational levels. Furthermore, the increase of knowledge in nanotoxicity of certain nanomaterials used in cosmetic formulations using laboratory techniques might also help in the further studies of nanocosmetics products in terms of its safety.
