Abstract
Tattoos have been practiced for thousands of years and are a common practice in many cultures and countries. However, as we know, the act of carving a tattoo is illegal in Islam because carving a tattoo is included in the category of changing the creation of Allah SWT. This study discusses matters related to the title “The phenomenon of tattoos among the people of brunei darussalam: its facts, reasons, effects and laws in islamic fiqh”, which is divided into 3 chapters. In the first chapter, the discussant will give an understanding and define the meaning of tattoos in terms of language and terminology, as well as the meanings of other dictionaries. In this chapter, the discussant explains the types of tattoos, namely permanent tattoos and also temporary tattoos, as well as discusses the method of tattoo carving and the tools used. The discussant also describes the history of the beginning of tattooing and its development in the first chapter. While in the second chapter, the discussant will present the evidence of the prohibition of tattoos found in the Qur'an and the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad Sallahu Alaihi Wassallam, as well as explain the wisdom of its prohibition. Apart from the law of tattoos, the discussant will also discuss the law of removing tattoos, as well as techniques for doing so. The effects of tattoos from a medical and religious point of view will also be described in the second chapter. In the last chapter, the discussant conducted a questionnaire on the extent of Brunei Darussalam's understanding of tattoos. Research from the results of the survey, concluded that there are still a handful of people in Brunei Darussalam who do not understand the law of tattoos and the risks posed by tattoos. So with the existence of this academic writing, In Shaa Allah will be able to benefit the reader to understand about the illegality of tattoos better.
