Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how people choosing their partner in Brunei Darussalam. To achieve the objective of this study, a survey was conducted on the selection of couples among Malays in Brunei Darussalam. This study also discusses the method of selecting the partner according to what is suggested by Islam. Here, too, is debating the common practice in Brunei in relation to the subject of this study, as well as, this study has been able to look at the differences between the two (according to Islamic views and practices in Brunei). What is clear here is that what Islam mentions in the spouse's election is to cover four things; Islam, Descendants, Wealth and Beauty, while the custom of Brunei emphasizes family ties that are more likely to be elements of wealth and descendants. As a result of this study we can see that the selection of couples in Brunei Darussalam is still based on Islamic Law although the main aspect in the selection of the couple is different.
