Abstract

This research aims to compare the criticizing methods between two famous Imams in Islam who are specialized in the science of Hadiths. These two Imams are Imam “Ibn Al- Jawzi” and Imam “Al-Shawkani”. In this research, the researcher narrows the scope of this comparison to be mainly on the so-called “False Hadiths” by referring to their publications in this field. He also uses a combination of inductive, analytic and critical methods. This research structure starts with a literature review and the history of the two Imams. Then the researcher stated their interests in Hadith Science and, mainly, False Hadith. After that, the researcher inspects their criticizing methods depending on Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi book that is “False Hadiths” and Imam Al-Shawkani book that is “The Collected Benefits in Weak and Fabricated Hadiths”. The researcher concluded the similarities and differences between the two Imams’ ways or methods of criticizing. He also concluded that Imam Ibn Al-Jawzi focused on both sanad and matn of Hadiths, and also, focused on criticizing the matn before than sanad. On the other hand, Imam Al-Shawkani has focused more on the sanad. Other comparison criteria the researcher concluded is that there is a difference in stating the facts in the two mentioned books due to the difference in circumstances and publishing time between the two Imams. Finally, the researcher has provided some recommendations that will aid researchers who are interested in criticizing the False Hadiths.
