Syafi’i school is a renowned ‘mazhab’ that has been reinforced in Brunei Darussalam. It has a great influence on the Islamic community of the country in their everyday life and even so, the Department of the State Mufti in Brunei Darussalam in their decisions to issue fatwas. Thereby, a research study titled ‘Methodology On Fatwas Issued By The Shafi‘i School In Brunei Darussalam: Analysis Of Munakahat Fatwas From 1994 To 2015’ has been carried out. This study consists of three research objectives. First, to research the methodology used by the Shafi’i school on issuing fatwas. Second, to analyse fatwas that has been issued by the Department of the State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam relating to Munakahat from 1994 to 2015. Third, to assess the methodology used by the Department of the State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam in issuing the fatwas and to what extent does it attached to the Shafi‘i school on issuing the fatwas. The methods used in this study are in the form of qualitative and library research. This study institutes that al-Qur’ān, hadith and the thought of the scholars of shafi’i school play a role in the methodology used to issue fatwas based on the Syafi’i school. Methods al Bayān dan al-Qiyās were also used in issuing fatwas. In conclusion, the Department of the State Mufti of Brunei Darussalam dominantly has used the beliefs and speculations of scholars among Shafi‘i school in the methods to issue the fatwas.

Halal and non-halal in sustenance are one of the issues facing by the Brunei community even it is also happened in some of Muslim countries. Various food products have been sold in market but not all of them stated halal logos. It makes certain people in a doubt to buy because they did not know the status of the product either halal or non-halal. Therefore, this study needs to be conducted to resolve the issue through Ihya Ulumuddin's book so that people can differentiate between halal and non-halal more clearly especially in the sustenance. Furthermore, it has explained in details in regards to the ruling. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the Syafi’i scholar views on halal and non-halal foods as well as the view of Imam Ghazali. This study uses the library method to obtain the necessary information. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive methods. The results of this study have found that Imam Ghazali is agreed with the Syafi’i scholar in various aspects. However, Imam Ghazali and Syafi’i scholar also have their own opinion in deciding the ruling. This study is expected to help Bruneian in choosing halal foods and also to distinguish between halal and non halal.
